Introduction

The obligatory nature of education in Suriname extends until the age of twelve, and the country had a net primary enrolment rate of 94 percent in 2004. There are 13 grades in all from elementary school through high school. The elementary school consists of six grades, the middle school of four grades, and the high school consists of three classes. In elementary school, students are required to wear a green shirt with jeans, while kids in middle school are required to wear a blue shirt with jeans.

Students who are transitioning from the second grade of middle school to the third grade must select between business and science courses. This will decide which topics will be the focus of their studies. The student must obtain a total of 12 points in order to continue his or her studies in mathematics and physics. For students with less scores, they will either be placed in business courses or will fail the subject altogether.
