The obligatory nature of education in Suriname extends until the age of twelve, and the country had a net primary enrolment rate of 94 percent in 2004. There are 13 grades in all from elementary school through high school. The elementary school consists of six grades, the middle school of four grades, and the high school consists of three classes. For students with less scores, they will either be placed in business courses or will fail the subject altogether.
