- being chartered, authorised, or certified by the relevant Australian higher education-related body, and providing at least four-year undergraduate degrees (bachelor degrees) or postgraduate degrees (master or doctoral degrees) in a conventional, face-to-face, non-distance education style.

2021 Sub-rankings by provinces and territories
The Commonwealth of Australia is made up of six nations and two major territories. The overwhelming majority of higher education institutions that follow the Topuniversitieslist selection criterion are based in New South Wales (Sydney), Victoria (Melbourne), and Queensland, which are the most heavily populated states of Australia (Brisbane). Both institutional units of at least two Australian higher education establishments matching the Topuniversitieslist allocation criterion are included in the following Topuniversitieslist league tables or sub-rankings.
