What are France’s most famous universities? Topuniversitieslist has published the 2021 French University Ranking, which includes 234 French higher-education institutions that fulfill the Topuniversitieslist selection criteria:
- being chartered, registered, or certified by the relevant French higher education-related institution, and providing at least four-year undergraduate degrees (bachelor degrees) or postgraduate degrees (master or doctoral degrees) in a conventional, face-to-face, non-distance education style.

2021 Sub-rankings by provinces and territories
The French Republic is divided into 18 administrative regions (French: régions), 13 of which are situated in metropolitan France and five of which are located outside of France. Departments (French: départements) are subdivided from regions. The Île-de-France district, which includes the capital and largest city of Paris, has the greatest number of higher education institutions that follow the Topuniversitieslist selection criterion. A significant number of French higher education institutions can be found in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes (Lyon), Occitanie (Toulouse), and Hauts-de-France (Lille). Both regions with at least two French higher education institutions matching the Topuniversitieslist selection criterion are included in the following Topuniversitieslist league tables or sub-rankings.
