What are Japan’s most well-known universities? Topuniversitieslist has published the 2021 Japanese University Ranking, which includes 717 Japanese higher-education institutions that fulfill the Topuniversitieslist selection criteria:

being chartered, registered, or certified by the relevant Japanese higher education-related institution, and providing at least four-year undergraduate degrees (bachelor degrees) or postgraduate degrees (master or doctoral degrees) in a conventional, face-to-face, non-distance education style.

2021 Sub-rankings by provinces and territories

There are 47 prefectures in Japan (Japanese: todofuken). The prefectures of Tokyo, which includes the capital and largest city of Tokyo, Osaka, Aichi, Hyogo, and Hokkaido, are home to the plurality of higher education institutions that follow the Topuniversitieslist selection criterion. Both prefectures with at least two Japanese higher education institutions matching the Topuniversitieslist placement criterion are included in the following Topuniversitieslist sub-rankings or league tables.
